En estos galardones, se premian géneros como la fantasía, el horror, animación, thriller, acción y aventura.
El certamen, que comenzó en 1973, es organizado por la Academia de Filmes de Ciencia Ficción, Fantasía y Aventura (Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films).
Este año, la premiación número 53, se realizó el domingo 8 de marzo y su anfitrión, por cuarto año consecutivo, fue el actor Joel McHale.
Las películas Sinners, The Fantastic Four: First Steps y Avatar: Fire and Ash, obtuvieron 12 nominaciones cada una. La película de Guillermo del Toro, Frankenstein, les siguió con 11.
Otras producciones cinematográficas con múltiples menciones fueron: Wicked: For Good, con 9; Superman, con 8, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, con 7.
La máxima ganadora de la noche fue Avatar: Fire and Ash, con 5 trofeos, seguida de Frankenstein, con 4.
James Cameron cerró con un fuerte discurso criticando a los Oscares y demás premios “serios”, por menospreciar a los géneros celebrados en los Saturn, afirmando que son las películas que mantienen el interés de la gente por asistir al cine, a la industria viva y a los estudios funcionando.
En el ámbito de la televisión, Dexter: Resurrection se puso a la cabeza con 6 nominaciones; mientras que con 5, se encontraban Andor (perteneciente al universo Star Wars), It: Welcome to Derry y Stranger Things.
Andor y Puribus se adjudicaron 3 preseas.
Reconocimientos especiales fueron entregados a:
George Pal Memorial Award, para Aliens por su 40 aniversario (Guillermo del Toro hizo el agradecimineto a James Cameron y parte del equipo de producción).
Saturn Hall of Fame Award, a Star Trek por sus 60 años (recibido por William Shatner y, en una segunda instancia, por parte del equipo y elenco, incluyendo a Rod Roddenberry, hijo del creador de la franquicia).
Lance Reddick Legacy Award, para el actor Titus Welliver (entregado por Laurence Fishburne).
Visionary Award, al cineasta Chrsitopher McQuarrie (presentado por Tom Cruise).
Robert Forster Artist’s Award, para el escritor y director Terry Matalas (otorgado por Paul Bettany).
Dr. Donald A. Reed Founder’s Award, a George Lucas (entregado por Mark Hamill, después de unas fallas técnicas con el micrófono).
Spotlight Award, para The Boys.
